You have a list of people who have asked you to send them info about what you do and what you have on offer.
You select some products, write a short intro, it's all done with a template so it's got a consistent look and they'll recognise it when it arrives

Lets get started ...
Step #1 – What’s the bonus you and your business will get from having a web site?
So you want to have a web site ... heck everyone else seems to have one, should you have one as well?
One of the first things to do is write a list of how the web site will help put more $ in your pocket, how it will save you time, and what it can automate.
Make sure you do this first before doing the rest of the steps outlined here, it’ll make the other steps easier.
Now you know why it’s important you have a web site, then next thing to do is define who you’re targeting - is it strangers, neighbours, or friends?
Step #2 - Who are you targeting Strangers, Neighbours, or Friends?
The visitors to your site are typically in one of three groups - Strangers, Neighbours, or Friends.
Strangers:
These are the people you’ve never met, don’t know you or your company, typically they’re on the web looking for info, have found your web site and are looking for a reason to do business with you rather than someone else who is only a few seconds and a click on the Back button away.
Neighbours:
These are typically prospective customers, it’s likely they already know you, perhaps through some other marketing you’ve done or a previous visit to your site for info.
Friends:
These are your existing customers – think of what you can provide them to keep them coming back. And importantly – referring their friends and colleagues to come do business with you.
Get Clarity
Your web site should focus on one of these groups to ensure clarity. If you have to, there are ways to focus on more than one group, like we do here on this web site ... we’ll get to that later.
Excellent you’ve selected your target audience, what’s next you ask?
Step #3 – Choosing the right Home Page style
There are 3 recommended styles of Home page that out perform the standard “This is who we are” home page.
 |
Sales letter |
 |
Newspaper cover |
 |
Magazine article contents |
Sales letter:
The Sales letter style home page is basically a letter to those arriving at your site, it’s aimed at your target audience, and like any good sales letter asks the reader to take a specific action, preferably now.
There are 2 schools of thought when it comes to writing these letters – long and short.
Short letters, say 250 – 350 words, or maybe as many as 500 – 600, usually no more than a printed page or two.
Long letters, often 5, 10, or more printed pages. These typically tell a story, or (like this page) walk you through a process.
What they both have in common is:
 |
Both have an attention grabbing headline (this is what gets the reader to keep reading past the headline – just like in a newspaper) |
 |
Describe what you’re offering and how they can get it |
 |
Followed by a call to action, preferably something they do now while it’s fresh in their mind and while they’re on you’re site. |
... just like if you were writing to a paper based letter.
Newspaper cover:
Just take a look at any newspaper cover page and you’ll get the idea of what this style of home page will look like. Typically a main article and several smaller ones on the page. Articles may be continued on a separate page. Each article has a headline drawing the reader in to read the article (just like a newspaper does) . This is like having several short sales letters on the page.
Layout and writing style is similar to a newspaper to give the familiarity and gain trust. The articles, however, are marketing focused to whet the readers appetite for your paid services or products.
Magazine article contents:
Check out the contents page of most magazines – these consist of article headings and for some articles, small intro text to further draw reader interest.
This style of home page is great for linking to 5, 10, or more marketing style articles. Excellent when you’ve got a lot of info you can share (in other words give value to the reader) – making your site a hub for locating information and still driving the visitor to use your products and services.
The home page of your website is by far the most important of all pages for people visiting your site – it’ll most likely be the most visited page and is the first impression you present to prospective customers.
Step #4 – What other pages do you want to include?
Typically you’ll have at least the following pages:
 |
About Us |
 |
Contact Us |
 |
Product / Service info |
 |
How-to and info articles |
About Us page:
The About Us page is a great place to tell your story – why you do what you do, what makes you unique, your key people (perhaps including photos), etc ...
Contact Us page:
The Contact Us page gives people all the details they need to get in touch with you and you can include phone and fax numbers, postal and location address, as well as email and perhaps even a map and directions on how to get to your business.
As an added bonus for all QSS built web sites all email addresses are “cloaked” – meaning it’s safer to include email addresses on your website because the special cloaking makes it much more difficult for automated spamming tools to decipher your email address. So your web site visitors get better access to you, and you get less spam.
Product / Service info page(s):
Many web site visitors these days will use your web site to gather information before contacting or visiting you to make a purchase. Pages that describe what you do and have will help people make a decision.
How-to and info article page(s):
Information and How-To articles are a great way to transfer knowledge and give value to your customers.
There is a special technique to writing these, if you want to find out what it is, then enter your details below (if you haven’t already signed up). Do it now and your first tip will be in your email inbox in the next few minutes.
